Teen Josie loses her barmaid mum in a crime of passion. Devastated, she vows to live her life only in dreams, inspired and comforted by pop music. But she can’t help falling hopelessly in love.
Innate bounce-back-ability helps her on a perilous journey of self-discovery. Along the way she becomes a unifying inspiration for her new friends, and with the prospect of true romance.
A feel-good entertainment, built on tragedy and heatbreak. Set in London, early 1960s. Themes of romance (young and not so young), ambition, conflicting loyalties, vulnerability, and the bitter consequences of knife crime.
Musically, the aim is a high energy show. It combines a pop loving ingenue finding refuge at a cafe, a guitar playing policeman and tearaway singer in a ‘give it a go’ band, and the reunion of a veteran music hall couple.
The cafe is the main location, with a band stand, fancy coffee machine and broken jukebox. I imagine the settings to be minimal, allowing swift scene changes for story momentum.
The song demos suggest tone and manner for interpretation.
